Ugly – In Samphedoo
What does “In Samphedoo” mean? Nothing, and that’s the point. Harry made the title up on the spot during an early 2023 vocal session, calling it his “cave dweller impersonation”, while Tom played a meditative, mellotron-like keyboard part very reminiscent of “Strawberry Fields” and the three of them hunted for a melody with sounds before words. The words came later, and the chorus is where singer Jasmine Miller-Sauchella put the hard part: trying to reach someone who isn’t there, physically, emotionally or both, with her father and grandfather in mind.
It’s the last single before “The South Facade”, the Cambridge six-piece’s debut, recorded in Wales, finished in London with Balázs Altsach and out 23 October on The state51 Conspiracy.
